Reality Check: VW CC

In most cases, when I get a commercial gig, I do the work, get paid and move on. As a freelance storyboard artist, my work typically happens early in the process, so I'm pretty much out of the loop by the time they start to put together the actual spot. By the time the commercial is done, my mind is already on other things. But occasionally, I'll wonder "whatever happened to...?" I recently did some digging around the 'net and was surprised to find a good number of my commercials out there. This is the first of a series of posts I will do where I will post my storyboards along with a link to the finished commercial so you can compare the boards with the final spot.

VOLKSWAGEN CC "RAVE REVIEWS (Driving at Night)"

This commercial was directed by Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford Coppola and
director of the feature film "CQ"). Although these were shooting boards, they also had to be clean enough to be shown to the client.

  1. Great post, Anson! I must admit, after all these years , its still a kick when you see the commercial on air that you storyboarded. Its one of those times when I can say to my kids, "Hey! I worked on that!" - and they actually (just for a minute) don't think I'm some lame guy who doesn't have a 'real' job. ;^) Thanks for this -- looking forward to the next one!

  2. You have to be careful with that claim. I learned that when I shouted proudly "I worked on that!" the usual excited response would be "Yah! What did you do? Did you write it? Did you Art Direct it? Did you build the sets?" etc. etc. My relatives are notorious for thinking I actually come up with the ideas.
